Gordon Cooper Students Win Big at HOSA ILC Competition

HOUSTON – Gordon Cooper Technology Center Practical Nursing and Health Careers students recently competed at the HOSA International Leadership Conference.

To qualify for internationals, the students placed first in their competitive event at the Oklahoma HOSA State Leadership Conference. Gordon Cooper had the most award winners for any Oklahoma Technology Center.

GCTC had eight gold medalists, two silver medalists, three bronze medalists at HOSA ILC including:

 

1st Place in Community Awareness: Cheyenne Phelps (Maud), Jackson Phelps (Tecumseh), Marianna Pettyjohn (Meeker), and Breanna Lemay (Newalla)

1st Place in Clinical Nursing: Kayla Martin (Prague)

1st Place in CPR and First Aid: Cameron Gonzales-Gunville (Earlsboro) and Alexis Francis (Asher)

1st Place in Clinical Specialty: Lacey Howard (Shawnee)

2nd Place in Nursing Assisting: Kortney Griffin (Shawnee)

2nd Place in Medical Assisting: Rebecca Rogers (McLoud)

3rd Place in CERT: Brooklyn Tucker (Shawnee) and Savanna Wenger (Shawnee)

3rd Place in Home Health Aid: Mikayla Maselli (McLoud)

Top 10 Finisher in Job Seeking Skills: Ally Fichtner (Shawnee/North Rock Creek HS)

Top 10 Finisher in Life Support Skills: Ethan French (Shawnee)

 

Jackson Phelps served as Oklahoma HOSA State officer for the entire year. The group also won the HOSA Excellence award.

The heath programs offer a special thank you to the GCTC Board of Education and Superintendent Julie McCormick for their support. A special thanks also goes to Director of Partner School Outreach, Ashley Fichtner, Director of Nursing, Lisa Johnson and Instructors/Advisors Megan Malouf, Ashley Miller and Rachel Pritchett.

HOSA is a career and technical student organization for future health professionals. Students from all over the world participated in the competition including the United States, China, Canada, Korea, Puerto Rico and Italy.
